World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate people with Down Syndrome around the globe. In 2012, the United Nations declared March 21st, the 21st day of the 3rd month of the year, as WDSD.  This signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. This day was also declared Ontario Down Syndrome Day by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2016.

For the last few years, the Down Syndrome Association of York Region (DSAYR) has been promoting the awareness of the ABILITIES of people with Down Syndrome within our school system. We encourage our students to come to school and rock their best mismatched socks, in honour of this day!
